I tried compiling FreeBSD 7.0 NIC drivers and installing them in FreeNAS, which didn't work, but I'm not a linux expert.

The servers LAN Port may be funtional but not fully. Point here is that you will have the servers MAC Address which provides you another way to identify the server on the network.If for some reason you do not see what I have described then your servers LAN Port is not functional or you have a break in communication between the server and the router which will require other work arounds. If your router supports IP Reservation you can reserve the IP Number for your server so that the router will always reserver the same IP Number for the server. If you see a device starting with the name MININT then your servers NIC is working but more important you should also see MAC Address for the servers NIC which I would write down.
